Counting Stars was released on June 14th 2013 on OneRepublic’s album, Native. It was written by Ryan Tedder, Brent Kutzle, Zach Filkins, and Noel Zancanella. Musically, it has a folk-pop sound with a shuffle beat, bell instrumentation, strings, and a choir singing the background vocals. There are also some elements of hip hop. Lyrically, it tells the story of a man's struggle to make his dreams come true.
The single achieved incredible success and it charted in the top ten in 18 different countries. In the United States, the song reached number six on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming OneRepublic’s third top ten single. It was also certified 8 times platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America, indicating 8 million in sales and streams. It topped the charts in Australia, Ireland, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and Ireland.
“Counting Stars” was also met with critical acclaim. It was nominated for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance at the 56th Annual Grammy Awards and won the Top Radio Song award at the 2014 Billboard Music Awards. It sold over 10 million copies throughout the world and was certified multi-platinum in several countries.
The song was also featured in various popular films like The LEGO Movie and Ted 2, as well as popular TV shows such as The Flash, Glee, and The Big Bang Theory. It has become a fixture in karaoke bars and club playlists, and has become an international success for the band.
OneRepublic continues to release new music, with their seventh album Human due out this year.
